Frequently Asked Questions about Adjustable Beds

What is an adjustable bed?

An adjustable bed allows you to elevate and lower your head, feet or both simultaneously to relax in the most comfortable position possible. Using the remote control you can adjust the head and foot sections of the bed. An adjustable bed consists of two parts: the base and the mattress. The mattress bends with the position of the base. Mattresses not built for this purpose should not be used with an adjustable bed base.

How does an adjustable bed differ from a flat bed?

Our bodies are not flat, therefore traditional flat mattresses fail to offer enough support. This causes pressure and discomfort during the night forcing your body to turn to new positions - one of the reasons people don't sleep well at night. Adjustable beds are designed to relieve pressure as well as to provide proper spinal alignment.

What are the major differences between adjustable beds?

Basic models come with a wired remote control. The more advanced models come with a wireless remote control and offer a variety of massage options including the ability to set the timer to wake you up in the morning with a gentle massage. Advanced models also include the popular "Wallhugger" feature.

What is a Wallhugger?

A Wallhugger adjustable bed allows you to stay close to your nightstand even after you change the bed's position – this is done by the bed sliding backwards at the same time the head is elevated . A Wallhugger can be adjusted to a thousand different positions. It provides individualized support to your head, neck, shoulders, upper and lower back, hip, thighs, legs and feet.

Which models include Wallhugger action?

S-Cape, ProMotion, Restapedic & Stromatic.

Your product descriptions refer to "head and foot articulation". What does this mean?

It means that the bed folds in two places thereby dividing the mattress into 3 sections: the head, the middle, and the foot section. It is also known as a two-point articulation system.

Who manufactures the adjustable beds sold by LivinginComfort.com?

Most models are manufactured by Leggett & Platt. Other models are made by Med-Lift or Ergomotion.

Leggett & Platt, a 100 year old company, has a rock solid reputation for quality and workmanship. They manufacture the electric beds for the Craftmatic Corporation. The nylon rollers used in a Leggett & Platt base, which are the most important moving part in an adjustable base, are nearly indestructible. While wood, metal, or other substances are noisy and wear out over time, nylon produces little friction, does not wear out over time, and is noise free. Their beds come with a 20-year limited warranty.

Med-Lift, a 17 year old company, manufactures the highest quality adjustable beds in the industry with a weight capacity of up to 600 pounds. Med-Lift adjustable beds come with a lifetime warranty on the steel frame and a four year parts and labor warranty that cover the motors and hand control.

Ergomotion beds are manufactured under ISO 9000 Quality Control Standard. The frame is made of powder coated carbon steel and the platform is made of 3/4 solid plywood (no particle board). It has heavy gauge hinges and roller bearings. Ergomotion beds come with a 20-year limited warranty.

Can I change the height of an adjustable bed?

Yes, extension legs can be ordered with the S-Cape & ProMotion adjustable beds.

The Sleep-EzzTM from Med-Lift also offers extension legs which let you raise the bed height 2", 4" or 6".

Extension legs may be necessary when placing an adjustable bed inside an existing bed frame.

Will an adjustable bed fit in an existing bed frame?

Our adjustable beds will fit inside 99% of existing bed frames. Bed extensions allow you to adjust the bed to its needed height in existing bed frames.

Will my existing headboard fit?

Yes, provided the bed is the same size. A headboard bracket may need to be purchased separately.

Which adjustable bed brands do you carry?

What types of adjustable bed mattresses do you carry?

We sell Innerspring, Memory Foam and Latex mattresses.

Innerspring Mattress Benefits

Innerspring mattresses conform to the movement of your body.  The hundreds of steel wire springs within each mattress move as your body moves yet provide equal support that cushions you.

We carry three types of innerspring mattresses:

1) The Luxury Firm Tight Top Mattress which is 7.5 inches high and contains a Leggett & Platt 312/13 gauge spring unit with super soft Topper Foam.

2) The Classic Pillow Top Mattress which is 9.5 inches high and contains a Leggett & Platt 312/13 gauge spring unit with super soft, high density Pillow Top Foam.

3) The Reversible Luxury Pillow Top/Luxury Firm Tight Top which as its name implies is actually reversible. It is approximately 9.5 inches high and contains a Leggett & Platt 600/14.5 gauge spring unit.

Memory Foam Mattress Benefits

Memory foam, also known as visco-elastic polyurethane foam, was originally developed in conjunction with the NASA space program to protect astronauts from the harmful effects of G-forces. Memory foam has the unique ability to conform to an individual’s body shape in order to provide support where it is most needed.

Memory Pedic memory foam mattresses come in 4 or 5 pound density foam. The four pound Memory Pedic mattress is pressure-sensitive and molds quickly to the shape of your body. It has more than 15% visco-elastic foam than any competing 8-inch or 10-inch model. The five pound Memory Pedic mattress is heat-sensitive and responds to body heat by molding itself to your body shape within a few minutes. Both the four and five pound Memory Pedic memory foam mattresses offer unique support and pressure-reducing comfort.

Memory Foam mattresses with Aloe Vera provide a unique moisturizing sleep environment making it easier to fall asleep and stay that way.

Latex Mattress Benefits

Latex foam mattresses are naturally hypoallergenic. Independent studies have proven that a latex foam mattress is three times more resistant to dust mites than non-latex foam mattresses.

Our latex mattresses contain six inches of high resiliency foam with four inches of latex to cushion your body's major pressure points. On top of the latex is one inch of super soft foam and 1.5 ounces of Dacron fiber with an imported Premium Belgium Damask cotton cover. Our latex mattresses do not sag and never need turning.

Can I use my current bedding on an adjustable bed?

As long as it is the same size there is no reason it shouldn't fit.

Does an electric adjustable bed require a lot of electricity?

No, very little power is needed to raise or lower an adjustable bed so it isn't costly.

Do I need special wiring?

No. Adjustable beds use standard, grounded, household outlets and are U.L. approved.

Is an adjustable bed safe?

Yes. The electricity flowing to the motors is fully insulated.

Additionally, all Leggett & Platt adjustable beds feature a free-fall safety design and the 100% polarized modular electrical system guarantees there are no stray wires to pull loose.

Does an adjustable bed qualify as a medical deduction?

Maybe. Check with your doctor. Doctors prescribe adjustable beds for patients with a variety of health conditions including hiatel hernias and poor circulation.

Can I set up an adjustable bed by myself or do I need a handyman?

You don't need a handyman, just make sure to have a minimum of two strong able- bodied folks (these beds weigh from 200 to 340 lbs. depending on size) to help you carry your adjustable bed from the delivery truck to your bedroom. Depending on the delivery option you choose, you will have to carry the bed from the truck or from the entrance of your home. The driver will not bring the bed into your bedroom unless you order "inside delivery with setup".

What are my delivery options?

Curbside without Liftgate

You will have to take the bed off the back of the truck (about 3 feet off the ground).

Curbside with Liftgate

You will have to move the bed from the street into your home.

Inside Delivery

The bed will be brought inside your home. The packaging will not be removed and the bed will not be setup. It will not be taken into any room or carried up or down stairs.

Inside Delivery with Setup

The bed will be brought into your home and setup.
